That's not true in Chinese, but after becoming I would never ever recommend Merriam-Webster to a beginner (or even fairly advanced students), because the Longman dictionary is good enough for almost all situations. Free up to 3,000 calls per month or nonprofit Encyclopædia Britannica — Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Merriam–Webster's Collegiate Dictionary — 1913 Edition is freely online by several hosts. These two are pretty comparable. Cambridge University Press — Cambridge Dictionary of American English, Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary (British), and others — Provides an API in July 2012. I almost never use English-Swedish dictionaries (I do sometimes for plants and animals) and I don't need to, because I understand 99,9% of all definitions in a normal English-English dictionary. If you don't want to go with Oxford, then either the Merriam-Webster or the American Heritage would be fine. All Advanced Dictionaries are good but the best on the market is still The Oxford Advanced and unfortunately, (for me) even better than Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learners. In fact it is one of the very few dictionary apps still available for Symbian OS (along with MSDict's Oxford and Cambridge Advanced Learner dictionaries).
