May 20, 2014 - As it approaches Earth in the coming nights, comet 209P/LINEAR will move quickly across the sky, traveling from Ursa Major to southern Hydra in just 10 days. Our beautiful starry sky ends up looking more like a whole lot of nothing except darkness, and that's because the light from the stars is usually too dim to be captured by the camera, especially if there are other light sources nearby. As the aurora moves in the sky overhead, the ripples in it are like the wakes and eddies peeling off a boat as at travels up a rough river at night, working at times with, at time against, the current and forcing what's there out of the way. Light Trails continue to be popular subject matter for many photographers and they can actually be a great training ground for those wanting to get their cameras out of manual mode and to experiment with shooting in low light at longer exposures. Here, after adding a little blue to my stars (the color is a little hard to see in the screenshot but you'll be able to see it better in your own image), is my final “Starry Night Sky” result: Photoshop stars effect. That means you'll need an 8-inch telescope and dark sky to see it well. Stars when we take photos at night. Timing/Light – one might think that the middle of the night is the best time for light trail photography (and it can be) – however one very effective time to do it is just as the sun is going down (just before and after). Its tracers: charged particles. To help slow the transition, I transfer my equipment to a camera bag that has also been outside, and only after sealing the bag do I move the bag and its contents into a warmer space. When closest on Given its stellar appearance at the time of discovery it was first thought to be an asteroid, but photos taken the following month photos by Rob McNaught (Siding Spring Observatory, Australia) revealed a narrow tail.
